Quote of the day.

Pounding hooves, tossing mane,Take me swiftly on my life's journey.Loyal friend, carry me to a place of safety.Lift me over the obstacles of my path

It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

"Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and, once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed."

--Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A horse is 'disobedient' in exact proportion to how difficult he finds the task. The trainer's problem is not how to punish the 'disobedience' but to discover *why* the horse finds the task difficult!" --William Hillebrand

Strength

Well down to one of the basic exercises that I find one of the best. Some seem to think that lunging is evil I find it very useful if done correctly. I do not lunge to take the "sting" out of a horse. The reasons I do lunge and use poles are , it works well to strengthen your horse over all.I do ride over poles as well but in the beginning I lunge over them. At least a few weeks. The Spanish riding school will lunge a horse for a year. There is no doubt that these horses are fit.

When riding a horse has so many things to think about as well as balance. When they are unfit, as most horses I see out there dragging around are, they can't perform to their potential.A horse needs to be taught how to carry itself correct whilst carrying a rider. If you put them behind the eight ball so to speak buy trying to teach a unfit horse you will get sloppy. That is about all they can offer. I don't mean that the whole program should be drilling you horse over poles for weeks on end. I do that it is a key piece of training that you can use out of your tool box. There are many others too. There are endless exercises to do which can keep your horse interested. Also loads of books with good information too. It is also a nice test of how fit your horse is. Start with three poles and trot them over it on the lunge you will see how quickly an unfit horse will fatigue. It takes a lot of work to get those hind leg stepping up and under.
